kennedy bakery

Kennedy Bakery’s pedestrian origin story belies the group’s uniqueness. The core duo found each other on Craigslist in 2007 – he was first to respond to her post; hers was the first post he’d read. Neither had played in a band before, but they had an instant musical connection, shared taste, and complementary skills. They developed a catalog of carefully crafted indie folk songs, set apart by their lyrics and uncharacteristically complex musical choices. They wanted a name that would pay homage to their city, and also give a nod to the timelessness of their sound – so they chose Kennedy Bakery, the original name of the oldest commercial building in Houston.

Over the next couple of years, the band grew to six members, and was nominated for a Houston Press award for best folk band. They released one EP, Historical Fiction, in 2010, shortly before disbanding. In an interview, the band explained the title: “The name of the album is Historical Fiction because that’s what these songs are. If they were Lifetime movies, they would say ‘based on a true story.’ None of them are purely autobiographical, but they are based on something or somewhere or someone.”

Glitter Milk Records re-released Historical Fiction in digital format on its 10th anniversary, alongside an additional EP entitled The Hawthorne Sessions, consisting of demo versions of tracks from the EP as well as previously unreleased tracks.
